Contact Lens Care Instructions

  1. ALWAYS WASH YOUR HANDS BEFORE YOU HANDLE CONTACT LENSES!!
  2. Never rinse soft contacts with tap water. Chemicals and bacteria found in tap water can ruin the contacts and cause eye infections.
  3. Avoid wearing your lenses while swimming, entering a hot tub or taking a shower. Bacteria in the water can increase risk for eye infection.
  4. Never put a contact lens in your mouth. The large amount of bacteria in the mouth can cause severe eye infections.
  5. Carefully and regularly clean contact lenses. Rub the contact lenses and rinse thoroughly before soaking the lenses overnight. Only fresh solution should be used to clean and store contact lenses. Never re-use old solution.
  6. Store lenses in the proper lens storage case and replace the case at a minimum of every three months. Clean the case after every use and keep it open and dry between cleanings.
  7. Only use drops that are specially made for contact lenses. Do not use Murine, Visine, or any medicated eye drops when you are wearing contacts.
  8. You may need to decrease your wearing time with using oral allergy medications since they may make your eyes and your contacts fry out.
  9. Hairspray and many aerosol sprays can ruin your contacts, if sprayed near the eyes.
  10. Put on contact lenses before applying make-up.
  11. Do not sleep in contacts unless the lenses have been prescribed for that purpose. Sleeping in contacts can increase your chances of infections by as much as 25 times!
  12. Replace contact lenses at the appropriate time that your doctor has prescribed. (i.e. daily, two-week, monthly, etc.)
  13. Do not rub your eyes. Your lenses may fall out.
  14. Gradually increase your wear time as a first time wearer. Remove and limit your time if redness, dryness, blur or discomfort occurs.
  15. If pain, irritation, redness, blur or other problems occur REMOVE YOUR LENSES! If the problem continues for more than 30 minutes after lens removal, SEEK PROFESSIONAL EYE CARE IMMEDIATELY by calling our office and scheduling a same day appointment.
